It might seem a little unassuming as a shade, but grey is in fact the most popular colour of car for drivers in the UK, according to new research from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), with black and white coming second and third in the rundown.
Interestingly, this is the fifth year in a row that grey has come top of the colour charts, although green appears to be making something of a comeback right now, with the biggest volume uplift of all the colours of the rainbow.
Shades that aren’t proving popular right now include cream, pink and maroon, so if you’re in the market for a new or used car, you may want to steer clear of these tones… or, if you’re looking for a bargain, you might be able to snap something up for a pretty penny if you decide that you’re fine with being pink or maroon on the road.
Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, commented on the findings, saying: “Car colour choice theoretically proclaims something about who we are as drivers and buying a car today comes with many possibilities to customise your vehicle to match. After choosing from the market’s ever-growing choice of makes, models, powertrains, wheel trims and in-car tech, picking out the perfect paint is an exciting decision to make.
“While the most popular shades remained unchanged for 2022, for those looking to ensure their vehicle stands out from the crowd, there remains a huge variety of colour choices from across the rainbow available to suit every character.”
Psychologically speaking, your choice of car colour could say a lot about who you are as a person… something else to take into account when shopping for a new car!
According to Hello Magazine and psychologist Lee Chambers, grey or silver car enthusiasts are often sensible and highly practical, as well as being reliable and conformist, with a need to stay out of the spotlight.
