As with anything, when it comes to driving there are all sorts of myths and urban legends that do the rounds and crop up time and time again… all of which could have an impact on how you drive and how safe you are on the road, which is why it’s important to make sure you’re separating fact from fiction when you’re behind the wheel.
So, with that in mind, here are some of the more common driving myths you’ll likely come across at some point, fully debunked so you can settle the arguments once and for all!
This is a very common myth that we hear all the time! And the answer is no, it isn’t illegal to drive in flip flops. It’s also not illegal to drive without shoes on, but what is important is that you’re able to use the pedals safely.
The Highway Code states that you must wear footwear and clothing that doesn’t stop you from using the controls in the correct manner, so while flip flop use isn’t illegal, it may be wiser to choose something a little more sensible to keep you and others safe on the road.
Interestingly enough, yes! Fuzzy dice can see you fail your MOT, since you need to be able to see as you drive and any obstruction over 4cm could be taken into account. To get around this, remove the dice before the MOT… and perhaps consider decorating the car with something a little less cumbersome.
One top driving myth is that if you speed past a camera and it doesn’t flash, it means that you haven’t been caught. Unfortunately, there are lots of different types of camera and some of them use infrared light, which doesn’t emit a flash… so your safest bet is to stick to the speed limit!
